Okay, more clues. ;D It's a two syllable word, and each syllable sounds like a word of its own. If you take the sections of the poem that refer to each bit, you should be able to work out the two separate words, then put them together to get the whole answer...

Each of the two words is one syllable...
The key sections are:
"My first is a simple process"
and
"My second sound is a terrible thing Your deepest, darkest desire"

Nope. Ret isn't a word that means "Your deepest, darkest desire"...

No..But it is part of "secret"..
Is it knowledge?

That would make "know" a simple process, and "ledge" your deepest, darkest desire. But it's kinda close...

Is it earnest?
Earn = My first is a simple process / By which you increase your fame / Or indeed your fortune: / Mathematics makes us both the same -- nothing is easier than actually earning / getting something
Not too sure on the second part......
But a different word, one that just jumped out at me:
Confess?
Con: you make money easily, freely.
Fess: Deepest, darkest desire is the fess up all the sins, and, without sins, wise beginners can go on.
Am I close??
*pleads*

Erm. Nope. Though you're beginning to think along the right lines, with regard to two separate words making one... Not quite, though.
