Ya so... I have to write an article for the high school newspaper, the Bulldog Express. This could determine whether or not I'm allowed to join the staff (I'm writing this as a contributing writer), so I'm kinda nervous. Critiques, please? It's due on Monday.

The marching band at Freedom is one of the largest programs in the school, and leading the band on the field during half time is the drum major. For this coming football season, Mr. Kovalic, better known as KK, needed to decide who would join drum major Liz McMichael on the podium. Potential candidates submitted essays several months ago, and a decision has been made- the new drum majors this coming year will be Molly Follmer and Stephanie Reese.
“Both ladies have shown a dedication to the program that exceeds the norm,” KK said. “I felt that they both equally would uphold the traditions, discipline, and leadership of the Big Red marching band.”
Liz, who will be a senior next year, said, “I have a lot of respect for K and he carefully thought through his decision, so I agree with his decision. Plus, I was pulling for his picks all along.” Liz was the band’s only drum major last year, so a lot of responsibility was put on her shoulders. She went on to say, “With the help of the new drum majors, section leaders, captains, and seniors, the band will be bigger and better than ever.”
“We’ve had a saxophone drum major for as long as I’ve been in band, so I figured it was my job to carry on the tradition,” said Molly Follmer, sophomore and saxophone player. “I’ve been to camp once already and I’m going again this summer, so I think I’ll be fairly well prepared. Plus, I have Liz to teach me and Steph.”
“Molly, Liz and I are all very determined, headstrong, and talented, so I feel that as a whole we’ll be successful,” said Stephanie Reese, a sophomore and the clarinet section leader. “I’m excited about everything- the games, parades, and the newfound responsibilities. I’m nervous about the band’s reaction to us as drum majors… but I know that everything will settle down once the season begins.”
With these three girls and KK ready for a new season to start, the band has a promising future. “Our numbers show success, our performances continue to impress and entertain, and the overall amount of fun and achievement proves this [success] also,” KK said. “I would ask any Freedom student who took the time to read this that they make a serious attempt to get involved with the “Arts” somehow, some way… I promise that they would enjoy their selection.”
